Aurora Collegiate Academy serves the greater Memphis community in the Highland Heights neighborhood. Our fundamental belief is that the foundation for academic and character success needed for college begins in kindergarten. We serve a diverse population of students in grades K-5 from all over Memphis and the world, and over half of our students come from Spanish-speaking homes. We pride ourselves on providing extensive support in literacy and language, even offering Chinese courses for all of our students!
Core to our mission, we unequivocally believe that every child, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or incoming academic level is capable of achieving high academic success. We hold that it is every child’s fundamental right to be provided with a tuition- free, academically rigorous public education. All of our students are capable to get to and through college.
We opened with a kindergarten and first grade in 2012. Next year, Aurora Collegiate Academy will be in its final year of growth and become a K-5 building, ensuring the foundation for our scholars’ futures is solid.
Along with academics, character is of the utmost importance. We instill the following five values in our scholars through daily teaching:
At Aurora, parents are our partners in the pursuit of a college education for our scholars. We value the engagement of our families at school and encourage constant academic updates between parents and staff. We have an open door policy with our families and we encourage our families to schedule a visit anytime.
We have many events throughout the year to involve our families at Aurora. Check the events page to see what events are coming up. Please check with your scholar’s teacher about individual classroom events like football tailgates and conduct celebration parties.
Three times a year we hold mandatory parent-teacher conferences. Parents are provided with an in-depth picture of how their scholars are performing academically and behaviorally. Teachers have the opportunity to share growth, progress, and areas for improvement. Teachers provide ideas to parents on how to best support scholar learning and their areas for improvement at home. Parents are also provided with detailed attendance reports and an opportunity to ask any questions. We work with our parents to ensure a mutually agreed upon meeting time. Our staff come from all over the nation to teach our scholars at Aurora. Staff members’ alma maters include:
Our teachers are driven, passionate individuals who work an extended day to ensure scholars are set up for success in college. They not only believe in our PRIDE Values, but live them out daily in their teachings.
Our board consists of eight community members from varied backgrounds. Each one has an interest in ensuring our scholars are prepared for college and beyond. Board meetings are open to the public and are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 6pm-7:30pm at Aurora Collegiate Academy (3804 Given Avenue, Memphis, TN, 38122).
